There may come a time when your Windows computer system is filled with duplicate files. No one likes that at all because depending on the number, it can be difficult to remove them all. But that’s all good, because there’s a program known as Duplicate Files Eraser, and we like it. This free duplicate file finder software lets you search directories, subdirectories, hidden files as well as system files for duplicate files, using the fast CRC32, MD5, SHA1 file comparison algorithms. You can also set file sizes, file types, names & other parameters to search.

We should point out that this program is not for everyone because some things are harder to gain access to that it needed to be. We’re hoping that this is because the developers released an unfinished program, which means everything should work as expected in a later update.

OK, let’s talk about this thing.

First thing is first, download the program. It comes in a zip file, so after download, just extract it to a folder and that’s it for installation. The next step is to open the folder and launch Duplicate Fire Eraser.

When we first launched the program, we realized it was not in English. Don’t bother playing around with the options in hopes of coming across the English setting because it is not there. To change it to English, return to the folder and launch the “settings” file. A Notepad file should now be visible, and users should be seeing something that says “lang = Deutsch.” Change it to “lang = English” and then save, close, and relaunch Duplicate File Eraser.

Everything should now be in English.

To locate a duplicate file, click on Search locations then “Add.” Locate the file, click on OK and watch as program does its best to find all the duplicates.

As mentioned earlier, it is possible to set Duplicate Fire Eraser to locate hidden files, and also to search system files and system subdirectories. Users can also set the program to only search for files with a specified size or file type.

Now one important thing to note is that just because duplicate files are found it does not mean that you have to blindly delete the duplicates. Some of them may be system files which may need to be in multiple places or some may be backed up files. So do go through the list and then take a call on which files can be safely deleted.

Overall, Duplicate File Eraser is a solid program, but the settings area may have some users running for the hills, if they are not advanced or willing to understand the complexities of this program. The design could be a lot better, but this is what we have come to expect from x86 programs, and we doubt anything much will change in the years to come.
